If you grow herbs, forage, or just like using natural remedies, making your own herbal capsules is a skill worth learning. Capsules make it easy to preserve herbs for later use, turn them into convenient supplements, and avoid the strong or bitter flavors of herbal powders.
Whether you’re filling capsules with immune-boosting herbs, nutrient-rich powders, or homegrown remedies, this process is simple and can save you money. Best of all, once you get the hang of it, you can quickly make batches to stock up for your family’s health needs.

This tutorial comes from the YouTube channel The Honeystead, where Kaley demonstrates how to fill capsules at home using beetroot powder as an example.
What You’ll Need
- Empty capsules (gelatin or vegetarian)
- Herbal powder of your choice (e.g., beetroot, turmeric, or freeze-dried herbs you’ve prepared yourself)
- Capsule filling machine (Kaley uses the Capsulit by Herb Affair)
- Small bowls for capsule tops and bottoms
- Spoon and spreader (for distributing powder)
- Tamper tool (to pack capsules tightly)
- A jar or airtight container for storage
Step 1: Prepare the Capsules
- Count out the number of capsules you want to fill.
- Separate each capsule into its two parts: the longer “body” and the shorter “cap.”
- Place all the bodies in one bowl and the caps in another to stay organized.

Step 2: Load the Capsule Bodies
- Set up the body plate of your capsule machine.
- Pour the capsule bodies into the plate and shake gently so each slot is filled.
- If any slots are still empty, fill them manually.

Step 3: Add the Powder
- Place the spill guard over the capsule tray.
- Sprinkle your herbal powder evenly across the capsules.
- Use the spreader tool to guide powder into each capsule.
- Once filled, use the tamper tool to press the powder down firmly.
- Repeat the process (add more powder, tamp again) until each capsule is packed as full as possible.

Step 4: Place the Capsule Tops
- Set up the capping plate with all the capsule tops facing upward.
- Align it with the body plate using the frame plate.
- Once everything is lined up, press the plates together firmly. This locks the tops onto the bodies.
- Remove the plates and you’ll be left with a tray full of neatly packed herbal capsules.

Step 5: Store Your Capsules
- Transfer your capsules to a clean jar or airtight container.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
- Properly stored, your capsules will last for months.

Why Make Your Own Capsules?
- Custom blends: Choose exactly which herbs and nutrients go into your supplements.
- Better taste: No need to drink bitter powders. The capsule hides the flavor.
- Save money: Buying herbs in bulk or growing your own is much cheaper than store-bought capsules.
- Control and purity: No fillers, additives, or mystery ingredients.
Making herbal capsules is a simple, rewarding skill that gives you more control over your herbal remedies and supplements. Whether you’re preserving homegrown plants or stocking up on powdered superfoods, this method ensures your herbs are ready whenever you need them.
