The Easy Way to Make Compost

If you love gardening, you should be subscribed to the Youtube channel, Growing Your Greens. They have hundreds upon hundreds of videos that teach every aspect of gardening you can imagine. And the host, John Kohler, is one of the most enthusiastic Youtubers out there and very fun to learn from.

To give you an idea of the kind of videos they make, here is one of their most popular videos. In it, John explains what he calls the easiest way to make compost ever. It all comes down to the ingredients and getting the right ratio of carbon to nitrogen, but it's not as complicated as it sounds.

Most people throw all their waste onto a single compost heap, but to get the right ratio, you should have different buckets for different types of waste. First, you'll need a “nitrogen bucket” with waste products like fruit and veggie scraps. (greens) Next, you'll need a “carbon bucket” with waste products like leaves and shredded newspapers (browns).

As you fill these buckets, also add some fresh compost from your garden to help get the composting process started. You'll also want to add rock dust with puts trace minerals into the compost. This can make a huge difference.

Once both buckets are full, add them to your compost pile or compost bin, that way you can be sure to have a 50:50 ratio. He recommends a compost tumbler so you don't have to spend time turning the compost with a fork.
